Chemistry
2020-2021
Mr. Basdeo
Deodath.basdeo@fwisd.org
Course Description:
This course will focus on the major theories and concepts in Chemistry. The science of matter and how it interacts will be explored though lecture, demonstrations, readings, and laboratory work. By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of the composition of matter, how matter is categorized, how matter interacts, the Atomic Theory throughout history, the signs and causes of chemical reactions, and the properties and structure of matter. Furthermore, this course will allow you to improve upon your problem-solving skills and to begin to connect your schoolwork with the real world.
Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives
Students who successfully complete Chemistry will be competent in the following areas:
â—Ź Explain the structure of matter.
â—Ź Explain how changes in matter are accompanied by changes in energy.
â—Ź Describe the relationship between temperature, pressure, volume, and the amount of gas.
â—Ź Predict products of simple reactions and balance chemical equations.
â—Ź Identify signs that indicate a chemical reaction has taken place.
â—Ź Apply the mole concept in stoichiometric calculations including those involving limiting reactants and percent yield.
Class Expectations and Rules:
Since this class is taken for FWISD credit, it is my belief to teach this class at the high school level, therefore, I expect you to behave, turn assignments in on time, and have fun learning. The rules that you are expected to follow are:
1. Follow directions the first time given
2. Have an open mind, respect everyone’s ideas and opinion, do not be rude
3. No food or drink in class
4. Raise your hand to speak or ask questions
5. Comply with school rules!
6. NO Cellphones!
Discipline:
If for some reason you do not follow these expectations and/or the class rules the following disciplinary actions will be taken (order of discipline can change depending on severity of action).
1. Verbal Warning
2. Hallway Conference
3. Call Home
4. Parent/Teacher Conference
5. Administrative Action
Resources:
Chemistry : Mc Graw Hill: In addition to this, students will also use online resources as is applicable to the understanding of chemical concepts.
Grading
Daily work & Homework – 40 %
Tests and Quizzes – 30 %
Labs and Projects – 30 %
Late or Missing Assignments
It is your responsibility to turn in all assignments. You need to check focus to see what assignments you miss.
Absences:
If you are absent, it is you responsibility to get make up work. If you miss a scheduled exam on a day you are absent, you are responsible for making it up the first day you are back at school, not necessarily the first class period back. Make up test will be given at lunch or in the morning or after school; you must complete the exam in three days.
Tutoring:
Monday/ Wednesday: morning and afternoon.
Safety:
A safety contract signed by you and your parent/guardian is required for this class. Safety in the lab is of the utmost importance and all safety rules need to be followed. Failure to follow procedures may result in loss of lab time.
