IDC4U – Units of Study
1 – Media Landscape – The students have no idea how much media they consume daily. From walking, to taking the bus, to driving and listening to the radio, people see advertising everywhere. We have a conversation about this asking them what does media mean and what does it entail? Eg.: Magazines, books, radio, ipods, smart phones, tv, gaming systems, etc. Have them add up the amount of media they consume within a week; have them separate each separate tasks, (for example if they are talking on the phone, texting, watching Netflix all at the same time, they need to count each and every one separately.). This usually sparks a quite interesting conversation; just go with it and have fun. It’s amazing how technology has completely changed the way we consume media.
2 – Magazine Production – In this unit, students explore how magazines are developed to reach specific target markets. In groups, students will learn about the publishing industry by assuming the roles of editors, writers, marketing staff and graphic designers to create a magazine geared to adolescents, young parents or seniors.
3 – Camera Shots – A good amount of these students have never taken photography or media studies before. We will be looking at what makes a good shot and how to produce it.
4 – The Power of Music – It is amazing how music can change a person’s perspective on a given topic/subject. In this brief unit, students will create a presentation proving their topic/point.
The students should be able to do this assignment in one class and present in the next.
5 – Advertising – A lesson on how influential advertising is the first step. There are tons of examples on the mediasmarts web page. Here, we talk about text and subtext and how those apply to the advertisers to get the consumer to purchase their product/service.
6 – Social Media – This unit starts off with a discussion/debate about what social media is and the effects it has on our society as a whole. This culminates with the creation of a video where the students hope will become viral.
7 - Documentaries - Throughout this semester, the students will watch different documentaries and we discuss different techniques used. For the last assignment, the students decide on a topic, do research and create a documentary on a topic they care about.
