After many games played, Congratulations to Richard Zhang as he was the last one standing after he defeated Haridharan Kiruban in the final.
It was a rematch of last years Vanier Chess championship but this time with a different winner.
Ivan Chen finished 3rd in the tournament with strong run of games finishing with a 6-2 overall record.
There will be another tournament before the March Break and then the GVSS Championship starting sometime in May.

2nd place - $10 gift card
3rd place - $5 gift card

Make sure you have a www.chess.com account and that you send me your profile name especially for those of you who are part of the club virtually. More news to come regarding club fair and our first tournament of the year.
Haridharan Kiruban
Richard Zhang
Daniel Chang
18 players started in the first ever chess championship at Georges Vanier SS and the championship final came down between Richard Zhang and Haridharan Kiruban. In the end it was Haridharan who took home the prize. Richard had not dropped a match on his way to the final and will surely be back next year to try and get the job done. Haridharan is only in grade 9 and will be back next year to defend his title.

Vanier chess tournament starts with 5 games played already this week. Advancing with 1st round victories were Isaac, Richard, Daniel and Hari while Shayan also advances due to a forfeit in his match.
There are 4 matches still waiting to be played before we can advance to our next round of games. It is a double elimination tournament so those on the bottom half of the bracket can still make it to the finals but they will have a little tougher route.

It looks like we will have a 17 player field to crown Vanier's first ever chess champion.
As I mentioned before, it will be a double elimination tournament which means you will not be eliminated until you have lost 2 games.
If you reach the final match, it it will be a best 2 of 3 format meaning you must win 2 games in the final to be crowned champion.
The Tournament will start the first week of May. I will post the first round of matches on the website and also email everyone.
Once you know your opponent, you will contact them and schedule a day and time during the week to play your match.
The match must be played before Sunday night.
There will be no time limit on games ( this is something to be discussed at our future meeting next week).
As mentioned before there will be a trophy for first place and a $50 gift card prize...plus bragging rights!
2nd and 3rd place awards to be determined.
Please confirm with me that you are still participating.
Look forward to a good tournament and of course having fun.
The tournament will star on May 4th and continue over the duration of weeks needed to crown a champion.
2 games guaranteed...prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
More information to come.
