Our Vision

The Mathematics Department at Runnymede Collegiate Institute firmly believes that Mathematics is not only a subject that should inspire tremendous curiosity and wonder, but that it is also a powerful tool for societal change. To that end, our department strives to make Mathematics accessible, meaningful and challenging to ensure that students can fully harness the power of Mathematics.

Who are we?

Our Mathematics team consists of experienced, innovative and student-centred educators including:

Supporting Students

Because our goal is to ensure that students are not only successful and engaged in their Mathematics courses at the school, but also that they are inspired and empowered pursue Mathematics education beyond high school, we are pleased to offer wrap-around support for all students. If you ever feel like you are struggling in the subject, reach out to any one of our teachers and we will do everything we can to support you!

How to support your child in Mathematics?

This is a question that we get all the time, and the research has provided some very interesting answers. Have a look through the findings from Dr. Jo Boaler from Stanford University - the Six Ways to Support Your Child in Mathematics. Keep in mind that these are practices we emphasize in our classrooms, too!

Extra Help

Extra help is available from our course teams at the school on a regular basis. You can also get extra support online from experienced Mathematics teachers online at TVO Mathify if you need online help at home!

Equitable Practices in Mathematics Education

As a whole school staff, and specifically as teachers in the Mathematics department we are committed to anti-discrimination, anti-racism and providing an environment that values everyone’s perspectives, beliefs, experiences and backgrounds. This means that we will strive to address inequities by ensuring that we meet the needs of all of our students in terms of the relevance of the content of our lessons, the way we deliver our lessons, the way we support students to access material and the welcoming environment of our classroom and school.  We are continually learning how best to support these goals, and will continue to build our knowledge and practices to support our students and the community.

Innovative Practices at Runnymede Collegiate

At Runnymede Collegiate Institute, we believe in challenging and supporting our students to reach their full potential - and one of the best ways to do this is to challenge ourselves regularly to improve our own practices.

As teachers, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to support student learning.  The practices below are practices that we are implementing in the Mathematics program at Runnymede, and you can read more about the research around these practices by clicking the links below.

Based on the research of Dr. Peter Liljedahl, our Mathematics team utilizes the strategies of the Thinking Classroom to ensure that students are focused on critical thinking in a student-centred environment

Based on John Hattie's work on Spaced / Spiralled Learning, our Mathematics team has developed course plans where students see the connections between curriculum topics throughout the course, a process that has been proven to aide in retention as well as to support long-term understanding rather than memorization

Our Mathematics team believes that while there are fundamental Mathematical processes that need to be mastered, one of the best ways to promote deep understanding of work is for students to engage in meaningful and challenging projects

Enrichment and Math Club

Math contests provide a fun way for students to push themselves and their thinking in creative ways.  We encourage all students to participate in these enriching activities which provide a great way to push problem solving to new heights!

Stay tuned for information on the Math Club this year!

Every spring, students from Runnymede compete in the Waterloo Mathematics contests. You can find previous contests here
