Our Mission:

Northern’s Student Support Services strives to support each and every student as they journey through the complexities of high school life. The focus of a visit to our office may be on educational planning, post-secondary research, social or personal challenges, family issues, or referrals to appropriate agencies.

The Northern’s Student Support Services office is a comfortable, caring, and welcoming environment for students and families—a place where you can obtain information and support. We serve the school community in a variety of ways:

• Support students in academic planning and course selection

• Help students seek out special pathways programs in secondary school that support their learning styles, interests and needs

• Provide information about all post-secondary opportunities, including apprenticeship, college and university application process

• Guidance in career/life planning, including supporting students in learning experientially about career pathways

• Help individual students to envision a plan for themselves and target some short- and long-term goals

• Increase our students’ financial literacy, including support with scholarship and bursary applications and sharing information about OSAP and budgeting for post-secondary and life beyond high school

• Support students in establishing effective study habits and exam preparation

• Support students with life skills like decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, stress and time management and relationship awareness

• Promote equity by providing culturally relevant resources and intentionally work with our racialized students

• Provide personal support and referrals to community resources

Each student is unique and counsellors provide assistance and support with that in mind.  Our purpose is to help young people recognize and reach their academic and personal goals, and to take full advantage of the opportunities available at Northern and beyond.
