SEMESTER TWO END-OF-YEAR CALENDAR

Leaside High School - Absence from Examinations and Final Evaluations

Absence from a Culminating Activity Evaluation

Culminating activities are completed toward the end of a course and are part of the student’s 30% final evaluation.

Culminating activities and examinations carry the same importance and the same attendance requirement. Thus, attendance during culminating activities is mandatory. Some courses have culminating activities that take place over several days.

If a student misses a culminating activity, the student will receive a mark of “0”. If a student misses the deadline for submission of a culminating activity, the student will receive a mark of “0”.

In the event that a student is too sick to complete a culminating activity, the parent/guardian must provide documentation of the illness.

The parent/guardian is asked to contact the school before the culminating activity due date. The parent/guardian will be given the Leaside ‘Missed Evaluation’ form to be completed by a medical doctor and submitted within two days of the missed culminating activity.

Family vacations are not considered excused absences and as such, students are expected to be in class for all culminating activities.

If satisfactory documentation of the illness is provided on the missed evaluation form, the culminating activity may be rescheduled. Otherwise, the student will receive a mark of “0”.

Absence from a Final Examination

Exam dates and times for all courses are set out in the exam schedule which is distributed to students and parents/guardians. We are not able to accommodate any changes to the exam schedule or requests to write an exam at a date/time other than the scheduled date/time shown.

Students are urged to check their exam schedule carefully. If a student misses an exam because of misreading a schedule, the student will receive a mark of “0”.

In the event that a student is too sick to write a final exam, the parent/guardian must provide documentation of the illness. Instructions are also provided with the examination schedule.

The parent/guardian is asked to contact the school before the exam is written. The parent/guardian will be given the Leaside ‘Missed Evaluation’ form to be completed by a medical doctor and submitted within two days of the missed exam.

Family vacations are not considered excused absences and as such, students are expected to be in attendance for all examinations.

If satisfactory documentation of the illness is provided on the missed evaluation form, an alternative evaluation may be scheduled. Students granted an alternative evaluation will receive a mark of “0” until they complete the alternative examination.

Special Education Supports

Students who require special education support will be provided accommodations according to their Individual Education Plan. These accommodations will be facilitated by our Special Education / Resource department. Students should be coordinating with their classroom teacher and the Special Education / Resource department prior to their examination date.

Exam Lengths

Grade 9, 10, and 11 Course Exams are a maximum of 1.5 hours in length.  Any student that requires additional time, may have up to 2 hours to complete the exam.  All students regardless of whether or not they finish early must stay in the exam room until the 1-hour mark at which time they can leave. They will then have the opportunity to leave at the 1 hour 30-minute mark, or wait for the 2-hour time mark at which point all remaining students will be asked to hand in their exams.

Grade 12 Course Exams are a maximum of 2 hours in length.  Any student that requires additional time, may have up to 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam.  All students regardless of whether or not they finish early must stay in the exam room until the 1 hour 30-minute mark at which time they can leave.  They will then have the opportunity to leave at the 2-hour mark, or wait until 2 hours and 30 minutes is finished at which point all remaining students will be asked to hand in their exams.
