Ontario Universities' Fair - October 21, 22, 2023

Ontario's universities are excited to host a collection of in-person and virtual events in fall 2023, where students can speak directly with university and student representatives.

These events are free and anyone may attend. Please note the following events and dates and consider posting them on your school website.

Ontario Universities' Fair (OUF)
October 21-22, 2023, 10 am to 5 pm, daily
Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building

The OUF is one of the largest educational fairs in North America. This event allows you to gather information and chat with representatives from Ontario's universities one on one.

Note: There are no university presentations at OUF 2023. If students are looking for a similar experience, we encourage them to attend the Information Sessions.

Ontario Universities' Regional Fairs

Ontario's university representatives are coming to a city near you as they travel across the province for this year's Regional Fairs. These events are fair style and offer an opportunity to speak directly with university representatives.

Ontario Universities' Information Sessions Virtual Events

Each virtual event gives students the opportunity to learn about the universities of their choice and ask questions.

Indigenous Students
The Aboriginal Post-Secondary Information Program (APSIP) will participate in the OUF and Information Sessions, offering students the chance to connect with Indigenous recruiters and explore their opportunities.

World Teachers' Day - October 5, 2023

World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers' Day, was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994. This global event serves as a reminder of the critical role teachers play in education and development.

With the theme "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage", the 2023 celebrations will aim to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda. Through various activities, they will advocate for a dignified and valued teaching profession, analyse their challenges, and showcase inspiring practices to attract, retain and motivate teachers and educators. It will also examine the ways in which education systems, societies, communities, and families recognise, appreciate, and actively support teachers.  (Unesco Website)

Happy World Teachers' Day to all of our wonderful teachers at Humberside CI. Thank you inspiring teachers for shaping the minds and hearts of our students. Today we are celebrating the passion, commitment, dedication and positive impact  that you have on all of our students.

A teacher's influence is eternal; you've left an everlasting mark on their lives. Happy International Teachers' Day 2023!

TDSB Recognizes Orange Shirt Day on September 30

Saturday, September 30th is both Orange Shirt Day and the second annual National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday.

Established in 2013, Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad, who was excited to wear her new orange shirt to her first day of school in 1973. However, when she arrived at St. Joseph Mission Residential School, her shirt was taken and never returned. From that day forward, the colour orange, for Phyllis, “reminded me of that [moment] and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared.”

Now, on this day, we recognize the legacy of the residential school system for First Nations, Métis and Inuit families and communities.

We acknowledge the legacy of residential schools in Canada by wearing orange and we honour the survivors. We remember the thousands of children who were murdered and buried in unmarked graves.

On Saturday, September 30, 2023 wear orange to participate in Orange Shirt Day.

1:1 Student Device Program

 Registration Deadline  Friday, September 15

Overview

In September 2021, the TDSB launched a 1:1 Student Device Program for students in Grades 5 and 9. The program offers students a district-owned and managed Chromebook for educational use. This device will be assigned directly to the student and will stay with them over a four-year period, 24/7. Devices will be tracked through the One2One Manager system.

Students will be able to take them home each night, on weekends and over holidays and will be required to bring them to school each day to support their in-class learning. This Board-wide initiative supports learning through technology, digital citizenship and our commitment to equity of access to technology.

Each year, incoming Grade 5 and Grade 9 students will receive their own Chromebook, too, until, by the 2024-25 school year, all students in Grade 5 and above, will have a TDSB-owned device.

For the 2023-2024 Academic Year

The families of students in Grade 9 who wish to participate in the Student Device Program this year must complete the Device Program Agreement Form they receive through Permission Click as part of the school year start-up package. An order will be placed for students completed agreements by Friday, September 15 at 4:00 PM. Any hard copy forms received must be entered into Permission Click by this date to be counted.

Delivery of devices is expected to begin the week of October 2, 2023.

The distribution of the devices will be co-ordinated  by our ACL of Library Learning Commons/School Wide Technology Ms. Schoales and VP Mr. Masciotra.

Please note that students are expected to charge their devices at home and have them ready for use in class.

Update as of September 7, 2023

Also, please note that the Student Device Program Agreement forms have not yet been sent to families with grade 5 or 9 students as there is an issue with Permission Click. This will be delayed until the current performance issue is resolved.

Update as of September 11, 2023

Update: Student device agreement forms were successfully delivered on the evening of Friday, September 8 to families of students in Grades 5 and 9.

2023-24 Semester 1 timetables will be available to all secondary students as of 12:01 AM on September 1. Please note that Semester 1 and 2 student timetables for Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 were emailed to all parents/guardians/caregivers on September 1, 2023.

Black Heritage Association Assembly (February 14, 2023)

Congratulation to the Black Heritage Association on an a fantastic, informative, interactive and engaging assembly for our HCI students.

During the assembly, our students were inspired by our guest motivational speaker, Jeff A.D. Martin who was very thought-provoking.  Students had the opportunity to listen to our music stage band perform Stand by Me,  learn about microaggressions, engage in a live triva game, listen to a performance of the spoken word, black love, and allyship. The assembly then culminated in an engaging fashion show.

Kudos to Mr. Campbell, Ms. Moore, and Ms. Kress for being the staff advisors and organizing the assembly.

To view some of the highlights of the assembly, please view the BHA Assembly Powerpoint.

Welcome to Humberside Collegiate Institute

felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas - happy is the person who has been able to learn the reasons of things

Humberside Collegiate Institute was established in 1892 and continues to serve the ambitious, academically inclined young people of the High Park area. The building is beautiful and old on the outside but bright and modern on the inside.

Our school helps students to become responsible, capable, and caring citizens with a lifelong curiosity and the desire for excellence. It does so in a supportive and co-operative atmosphere of mutual respect.

The Humberside graduate will be a well-rounded person whose intellectual, psychological, and physical needs have been addressed. The graduates will have had many opportunities to develop themselves through both curricular and co-curricular activities.

The Humberside community has worked hard to implement a number of environmental initiatives. Led by the enthusiastic Humberside Environmental Action Team (H.E.A.T.) we have worked hard to lessen our footprint, become more sustainable and to inform students, and the community at large, of important environmental practices and events.

The hard work of everyone at Humberside has resulted in our 'Gold Ecoschools' accreditation. However, we believe we can do better, and as such, are striving for Platinum certification at the end of this year!
