What is a Dual Credit (DC) course?
Dual Credit courses are taken by high school students. They are called Dual Credit because you get two credits - one elective high school credit and one college credit. Please note that the grade you earn at a Dual Credit Course will be shown in your high school transcript, as well as on a college transcript.
Dual Credit courses follow college timelines, so are generally run at the following times:
Fall Term - September to December (1 class per week)
Winter Term - February to May (1 class per week)
Condensed Spring Term - May to June (2 classes per week - limited selection)
Summer Term - July (limited selection of courses - 3/4 classes per week)
What do I need to know?
Courses offered will vary from semester to semester. This is the latest list: DC Master Chart.
You may want to consider taking the dual credit at the college you plan to attend after high school (especially if you are applying for college)
You are not guaranteed a spot in Dual Credit, so do not count on it to complete your OSSD
You are more likely to be accepted if you are in grade 12, are in the college pathway, or are part of SHSM
How will this affect my other classes?
For most DC classes, you will need to miss one afternoon class per week. You will be excused from that class, as long as you attend your college class at that time. Due to this requirement, dual credits are usually taken by students who have afternoon or full-day co-op. However, whether or not you can take a Dual Credit will depend on your overall course load.
How much does this cost?
Nothing. The program provides any and all necessary textbooks, materials, and fees. If you were attending the Dual Credit course in person, you will be provided with Presto passes as well.
How do I apply?
Please speak to the Dual Credit liason teacher in the library back office. You are advised to talk about it with the teacher approximately 2 months before the course begins, so that you can sign up as quickly as possible.
