In order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), all students must complete the following:
· a minimum of 30 credits (18 compulsory courses and 12 elective courses)
· the literacy requirement (passing the OSSLT or completing the OLC course)
· 40 hours of community involvement/volunteer activities
To understand what community involvement is, why it is important and the steps to follow in order to complete this important graduation requirement, please review the TDSB Getting Started Guide for Community Involvement
Students are asked to first discuss a volunteer opportunity with their parents and have their parents sign the Student Community Involvement Activity Notification and Completion Form
to indicate that they give permission for their child to participate in the specified volunteer activity. Once parental permission has been obtained, students are asked to meet with their guidance counsellor to discuss the volunteer opportunity and to obtain pre-approval. Once the parent signature and guidance counsellor signatures have been completed, a student is ready to begin volunteering.
Remember: Starting in September 2019, students must meet with their guidance counsellor BEFORE volunteering .
For a detailed list of approved and ineligible activities, please view the second page of the Student Community Involvement Activity Notification and Completion Form
Note: Schools are responsible for recording 40 hours in the student’s profile. Any additional hours will need to be tracked by the student.
