The next Gateway School Council will take place on at p.m. (in-person) in the Gateway Staff Room.
Parents are welcome as volunteers in our classrooms, on field trips and as members of our active School Advisory Council. Teachers plan and deliver program as grade teams and work in a supportive and collegial atmosphere. Students treat each other with care and respect and play cooperatively on our playground. Our students are our shared responsibility. Staff make an effort to know as many of the students as possible, and work together to support the academic and social development of each individual child.
Our supportive School Council is an asset. Pizza Lunch fund-raising allows us to support school excursions. The Volunteer Readers Program supports our youngest readers. Throughout the school year, parents have opportunities to learn about their child's education (e.g.Literacy & Math Nights) and attend parent workshops. The Pride and Heritage Daycare provides various child care options. Gateway houses International Language Saturday Programs for 10 different languages.
Students are exposed to the Arts at all grade levels through programming from specialist Music, Visual Art and Drama and Dance teachers. Drama is taught in our unique drama/dance studio. Students annually attend the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Ballet, and a variety of performing artists visit the school. A school musical is produced each year.
Physical activity, nutrition and wellness are school foci. We offer a variety of non competitive sports and intramurals. Gateway participates annually in sports such as baseball, cricket, bordenball, volleyball, basketball, cross country and track and field.
We utilize a variety of facilities within walking distance of the school: the Dennis Timbrell Library, Paradise Playground and the Ontario Science Centre. Mooreland's offers an after school and lunch time programs. Students skate frequently at the Angela James Arena.
Gateway integrates character education and equity into curriculum. Equity themes are coupled with TDSB character traits as topics for reading, writing and oral communication. Monthly assemblies recognize students of character and classes share their classroom explorations of the topics. We strive to support a school culture that celebrates diversity and mutual respect.
