MANDARIN COURSE OFFERINGS
Grade 10 • LKMBD1 • Academic
This introductory course in Mandarin allows students to develop and apply their speaking skills in a variety of contexts, and to participate in activities that will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. They will also explore aspects of the culture of Mandarin speaking countries.
Listening skills - Students learn to respond with understanding to what others say while participating in brief, structured interactions in Mandarin about themselves, family, friends, and their immediate environment.
Speaking skills - Students learn to communicate information and ideas orally in Mandarin, using appropriate language structures, and language suited to the purpose and audience
Reading Skills - Students learn to interpret meaning, in level-appropriate texts in Mandarin as well as learn to understand a variety of texts, (simple texts) in Mandarin
Writing Skills - Students learn to write Mandarin characters and extend those characters to write simple messages and eventually short paragraphs.
Grade 11 • LKMCU1 • University
This Mandarin course offers students opportunities to further develop their knowledge of the international language and to enhance their communication skills. Students will study Mandarin literature, and will continue to explore aspects of the culture of countries where Mandarin is spoken. (Prerequisite - LKMBD1)
Grade 12 • LKMDU1 • University
This course prepares students for university studies in the Mandarin language. Students will enhance their ability to use the language with clarity and precision, and will develop the language skills needed to engage in sustained conversations and discussions, understand and evaluate information, read diverse materials for both study and pleasure, and write clearly and effectively.
Students learn to apply their native Mandarin language skills to sharpen their critical thinking and thought organization in relation to both written and spoken Mandarin.
Oral skills: Giving and receiving constructive feedback. Also, students learn public speaking strategies, debate strategies, elaboration strategies (such as extend or contend), thought provoking questioning / higher order thinking questions (such as “how might, or “what if..”)
Reading: Reading for meaning (such as identifying bias), examining news articles and other current events publications (such as China Today)
Media Studies: learning how to give a critical review of movie, examining advertisements to identify trends.
Writing: Learning the P.P.A. (Point, Proof, Analysis) approach to written short answer questions. Learning the format for opinion essays, writing formal news articles
Prerequisite: LKMDU1 International Languages, Level 3, University Preparation/ LKMCU1
