Northern’s Special Education Department offers a comprehensive gifted program with a distinct structure and content. The type of material covered, the pace, and the assessment and evaluation strategies are geared towards gifted students.
Many academic subjects required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma are offered at the gifted level, as well as many optional credits, to allow for a concentration of gifted programming. Rotation courses are also offered in grades 9 & 10. Each rotation course consists of three exploratory units and one major independent study.

Pay it Forward:
Each year the Gifted Department invites recent grads back to Northern to speak to current students about the transition to post-secondary. As a panel, the alumni are able to answer a variety of questions and provide relevant insight into life outside of Northern.
Gifted Advisory Committee:
This committee is run by an active and involved parent group. Together with staff, they work to support gifted students and organize events that provide enrichment and educational opportunities for both students and parents within the community.
Special Education Facilitators:
Extra help is provided to students through the gifted resource office. Students are encouraged to make appointments to receive additional support with both academic and executive functioning concerns.
