The History and Establishment of TCV School Chauntra
The Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) School at Patlikuhl was home to more than 600 children, the majority of whom were orphans and children from underprivileged backgrounds. For many years, the school faced a serious threat from the River Beas, whose changing course frequently caused severe flooding, especially during the monsoon season. The situation became increasingly dangerous as floodwaters approached the school premises, putting the lives of students and staff at risk.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Himachal Pradesh State Government officially declared the area a flood “Danger Zone.” This declaration left the school administration with no alternative but to relocate the institution to a safer location before a major tragedy could occur. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the children became the highest priority.
The search for a suitable site led to the development of a new school campus at Chauntra, located about 80 kilometers from Dharamshala in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Construction of this long-awaited project began in the early 2000s. Spread across nearly 15 acres of scenic land, the new campus was designed to provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for students.
A historic milestone was achieved on 21st November 2004 when His Holiness the Dalai Lama officially inaugurated and blessed the new school campus. Since then, TCV School Chauntra has continued to uphold the vision and values of the Tibetan Children’s Village organization.
Like other TCV schools, TCV Chauntra is a residential co-educational institution dedicated to providing quality education while preserving Tibetan culture, language, and identity. The school operates under the guidance and supervision of the TCV Head Office located in Dharamshala Cantonment, Himachal Pradesh. Today, TCV Chauntra stands as a symbol of resilience, hope, and commitment to the education and welfare of Tibetan children.
