Spelling Sorts will come home every MONDAY. Spelling Tests will be every Friday. Students will work on their lists daily, but students will be expected to study these words at home as well. Clink the following links for helpful videos on how these tests work:
If your child has picture sorts, they do not have to spell the whole word correctly, they only have to get the skill they are working on. For example, if your child is working on -SH and -CH words and they have a picture sort, they only have to get the "SH" and "CH" correct in their spelling. If they spelling "ship" as "shep" they would still get full credit because they got the "SH" pattern correct.
If your child has a word sort with NO PICTURES, your child will have to spell that whole word correctly on their test to get credit.
Every week in your child's poetry binder, there will be a Phonics Poetry Reader. This will be focused on the phonics skill of the week. Please read through the poem with your child and make sure they can read it to you! We will also be focusing on this during the school day. I suggest reading it at least 3 times at home for that repeated reading practice that will help with reading fluency and pace as well as high frequency word recognition!
Due to COVID-19, I will not be sending home paper reading bags for homework this year. Please make it a priority to read at least 15 minutes each night. Please record minutes read on your child's reading log, which is located in their Boomerang Binder. Once a log is filled, students will receive some type of small achievement reward and then a new one will be sent home.
Reading includes:
Student reading by themselves
Student reading to an adult or sibling
Student reading to stuffed animals
Student listening to an adult read to them
Reading DOES NOT include:
Listening to reading on a device **Reading and listening to books online is a very good skill to do at home, but does not count for daily reading minutes.
Each day your child will have a practice sheet that corresponds with the lesson that was taught in school that day. Please complete it with your child and return it the following day. that your child is in school.
Every week your child will bring home a Poetry Binder. We will work on poetry in class and the binder will be full of poems that they write as well as poems that we read, study and sing together. Read the poems at home with your child and have fun singing the songs that go with them! Please return this binder the following Monday or the first day that your child is in school with the hybrid model.
