We will hold auditions in the afternoon on the first day of camp. Here are some quick things for you to know about auditions:
Everyone makes it into the show!
Your audition serves many purposes:
It helps us get to know everyone
It gives us a chance to see our students work as a group
It gives us a chance to practice the skill of auditioning!
We cast the principals (sometimes called "leads") after auditions and announce them on Day 2.
We're paying attention to skill, but also someone's ability to learn and work with the teachers.
We'll sometimes do "callbacks". Callbacks are when we want to try someone on a particular part.
If you want a solo in the show you must sing by yourself on audition day. No one is forced to sing alone, but if you want a principal singing role, you must sing by yourself!
There are non-singing speaking roles in this show.
We sometimes cast parts after audition day based on growth that happens over the course of camp.
Although the principals are usually our oldest students, we always have special parts for younger students who excel in their auditions.
You will have LOTS to do even if you're not a principal. Members of the chorus may not have lines, but they usually have more to do in the show overall. Everyone in Something Rotten Jr.! will be performing in at least six songs.
Below are some items that will be a part of auditions. You do not need to prepare these ahead of time. Audition songs and dances will be taught in the morning on the first day, and sides will be handed out and rehearsed in class. Students hoping for principal parts may want to at least familiarize themselves with the materials, but it is not required.
The first excerpt will be taught and sung by everyone on the first day. The other two excerpts will be used by students in our oldest two groups.
You can practice along with the rehearsal tracks linked on this site!
"Sides" are parts of scenes that you'll read and perform with a partner or group. You won't need to memorize these, but you'll need to show us character development and expression. We only do sides with Group 1 and Group 2 (usually 6th-8th graders). Sides will be handed out on the first day.
Feeling nervous about the first day? Here's a video we put together to give you an idea what to expect. Some of the specific times in the video might be different, as our daily schedule has changed since we first made it.
