Course Description

English IV uses the NC Standard Course of Study, based on the Common Core State Standards, as the basis for instructional goals. These goals focus on reading and analyzing different text types (literature and informational), writing, speaking, and listening, and language usage. 

Students can expect a variety of instructional methods in English IV, including direct instruction (lectures and interactive lectures), partner/group work, projects, and individual work. 

Methods of Instruction

Expectations are

• regular writing instruction, practice, and quizzes

• regular reading and writing assignments 

• project work

• class presentations

Grading plan

1. English classrooms at BHS use a “rolling” grading system. The cut-off for each “rolling” period is the end of each quarter. Each graded assignment is categorized. All assignments in a category are then averaged, and this average is used to calculate the final grade based on the category's weighting.

2. Grading categories are weighted as follows:

   1. EOC       25%

   2. Classwork

      1. Formative (daily work/practice) 30% 

      2. Summative (major assessments/projects) 45% 

3. LATE WORK

   1. 1. 1. I encourage you to complete all your assignments on time for effective time management, mental well-being, and academic success. If you have trouble for personal or academic reasons, please get in touch with me BEFORE the due date (well before, if possible). While email is acceptable, I prefer an in-person conversation.

2. If, for whatever reason, you cannot complete an assignment on time during the first quarter of the semester, your grade will be recorded as a 50. Once the assignment is completed, the quality of the work will be graded, and the final grade for the assignment will be determined by averaging the finished assignment with a 50. During the second quarter of the semester, the grade will be averaged with a zero when late. Please don’t turn something in late and ask when I will grade it.

3. If turning work in late becomes a habit, I will discuss this with you and your guardian to explore the reasons behind it and identify strategies to improve your time management and timeliness. 

4.   CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

• Respect everyone and their time. Be on time and be engaged! Be an active listener. Focus on the task at hand.

• Come to class prepared with a CHARGED Chromebook, something to write with, and something to write on.
