To build vocabulary skills and improve reading comprehension, we learn and study word stems. These "word parts" are the building blocks of many words in the English language. Learning the meaning of stems can help students better predict the meaning of unfamiliar words they may encounter in text across content areas. In sixth grade, we learn 135 stems at a rate of approximately 5 per week. Each Friday, students are quizzed on their knowledge of the meanings of that week's stems. Study tools include online flash cards such as Quizlet or StudyStack, Word Wall online quiz game, and assigned classwork/homework practice. Students may also use our Stems Google Slides (see links below) to help them learn and remember the meanings.
