How did your experiences at Jackson Hole High School help you to reach your educational and /or professional goals?

As part of the JHHS Debate Team, I learned to communicate ideas and think on my feet. Mr. Young's audio-visual class -- back in the analog days! -- inspired me to study television and film production in college. After working a few years in TV news, I realized I wanted to become a doctor like my dad and his dad before him. Teachers and activities at Jackson Hole High School taught me the importance of communication, organization and self-reliance. These skills gave me the confidence to pursue my passions in college, and the resilience to switch careers as a young adult.

What was the most valuable lesson that you learned while a student at Jackson Hole High School?

For kids growing up in Jackson, avoiding wild animals and frostbite is second nature. It's hard when you are in high school to recognize the more nuanced seeds that are sown for a productive adult life: like responsibility, honesty, valuing relationships, and managing time. These are all skills I learned at Jackson Hole High School.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

My greatest professional joy comes from being able to practice medicine and volunteer in the community where I grew up. After becoming a family doctor, I worked in large western cities for 15 years. Since coming home to Jackson in 2008 I have been able to balance my medical practice with rewarding volunteer work as a volunteer firefighter and Civil Air Patrol pilot.

What advice do you give current Jackson Hole High School students?

When you're in high school, it's hard to think past graduation day. But high school graduation marks the beginning of the life you choose. See the world! Don't be afraid to try something or someplace new. If it's not working, make a change. Find work, relationships and a life that makes you balanced and happy.
