ABOUT ME!
Hi, my name is Sabrina Knight, and I am a History Secondary Education major at TCNJ. Growing up, I excelled in history and English and decided to become a history teacher during my final years of high school. The teacher and classroom experience made me want to give my future students the same opportunities. Every student, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, or language, deserves equal and adequate education to help them grow into the best possible versions of themselves. My main fear as a future educator is being unable to help my students succeed.
WHAT IS LANGUAGE DISCRIMINATION?
Language discrimination is when people are treated differently due to their native language or language ability. Someone could be discriminated against for having an accent, vocabulary, "slang" usage, or sentence structure. Language variety is very prevalent in America yet discouraged in the classroom. This discrimination primarily targets students of color, predominantly Black and Latino students.
It is the job of future teachers to combat discrimination within the classroom to create a safe space.
