Collaborative note-taking works well in small- to medium-sized classes where the goal is to foster knowledge-sharing, peer-to-peer discussion, and active participation. This method requires minimal preparation and maintenance throughout the semester.
Faculty are encouraged to check with students regarding their comfort level with various digital platforms to ensure collaborative note-taking is accessible to all. Students can also be encouraged to log into these platforms with their TCNJ Accounts to ensure access.
If students are contributing anonymously, they can simply type into the document. If students are keeping track of notetakers, they can mark their name next to a note. While color-coding can be used, it should not be the only means of marking content.
Students can work on separate documents of their choice and collaborate by uploading their work to a shared Drive. The Drive can be organized by class session, week, topic, or another format, whether determined by students or the instructor.
Students can work on separate documents of their choice and collaborate by uploading their work to a collaborative board, such as Padlet. Students can post notes, images, links, documents, audio, and other file uploads into organized columns.
Canvas Collaborations and the Redirect Tool are two ways to integrate collaborations into Canvas. Use the drop downs to explore each feature.
Use Canvas Collaborations to create groups of students and provide them with a shared note-taking document.
Open Collaborations in the navigation bar.

Add up to 50 collaborators (students), who can view and edit the Google Doc at the same time.
Canvas Groups can also be gives access to a shared document under “Collaborate With.”
The Redirect Tool adds a custom link to the course navigation menu in Canvas.
Enable the Redirect Tool in Settings -> Apps -> Search “Redirect.” Click Add App in Canvas settings.
Add a name that will show up in the Navigation Menu. This can be the tool to which you are linking.
Paste the link into the URL Redirect space. Make sure sharing permissions are open to all students.
Click Show in Course Navigation, then Add App.
Refresh your Canvas page to show the redirect tool with the name you assigned during setup.
