Project Information

Location

The Somerville Circle sits at the intersection between US Routes 202 and 206 and New Jersey Route 28 on the border between Raritan and Bridgewater Township.

Problem Statement

The Somerville Circle is a notoriously confusing traffic circle which requires drivers to merge with low visibility at high speeds. The circle is particularly dangerous to drivers who are not familiar with it. Over one thousand accidents have occurred on the circle in the five-year span between 2015 and 2019. As far back as 1996, local officials have called for the circle to be removed outright.

Accidents which have occurred on the circle have had an estimated societal cost of at least six million dollars every year since 2015, peaking at $9 million in 2019. On average over 300 accidents have occurred yearly between 2015 and 2019, with one in ten resulting in a possible injury.

The Redesign

JEMCA Associates plans to use the Somerville Circle as a proof-of concept to implement a diverging diamond interchange. New Jersey is one of only three states in the nation which have not implemented a diverging diamond.
