Program Requirements

Bundle of Credits

Being a SHSM student requires a little bit of planning when you do your course selections. In order to graduate with a Non-Profit SHSM you must complete the following credits, as part of your regular OSSD requirements:

  • ONE grade 11 or 12 English credit

  • ONE grade 11 or 12 Math credit

  • ONE grade 11 or 12 Science or Business Credit

  • FOUR grade 11 and/or grade 12 credit from the chart to the right:

(*some of these courses may not be offered every year at Newman*):

Co-op

Complete a 2 or 4 credit co-op in a placement related to the non-profit field.

Certifications

You will receive training in Ethical Considerations, First Aid/CPR and WHMIS.

As well as certifications in at least 3 other areas such as:

  • advanced training in a technique/technology

  • anti-oppression and allyship training

  • behavior management

  • communication skills

  • compass/map/global positioning system (GPS)

  • conflict resolution

  • customer service

  • environmental awareness

  • equity and inclusion

  • event coordination

  • fundraising

  • group dynamics

  • incident management

  • infection control

  • leadership skills

  • mental health awareness

  • non-violent crisis intervention

  • personality inventory

  • portfolio development
