We are committed to creating classroom environments that foster equitable linguistic balance. We welcome and encourage students to rely on their rich linguistic repertoire to help them make meaningful connections in the French language.

At Mary Ward, we aim to write lessons and teach using The Common European Framework of Reference. CEFR is an international standard for describing language ability. It describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. Teaching with CEFR as a reference allows students access to a meaningful and useful point of reference that is understood globally and that informs their decisions on measuring language knowledge and skills.
At Mary Ward, we also provide our students the opportunity to participate in the DELF (Dîplome d'études en langue française) examinations. The DELF and DALF are six separate diplomas issued by the French Ministry for National Education to certify the French language skills. These diplomas are valid for life. DELF and DALF certificates are developed by the Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP) and reflect the six levels of the Common European Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
Two of our teachers in the French department are certified DELF examiners and scorers. Our teachers are able to help prepare students to challenge the DELF examinations. We have had many Mary Ward students participate with great success!
