One of the main goals of the Canadian & World Studies and Social Sciences & Humanities (CWS/SSH) department is to equip our students with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to successfully navigate through the world in which they exist and the future that awaits them. Students are challenged to develop a critical lens through which they can examine our media saturated society, develop an understanding and respect for different perspectives, and develop the ability to be creative problem solvers.
Students will leave our classes with:
• A better understanding of themselves and their place within society;
• An improved awareness of the world and its issues including issues they will face as citizens of our communities and as global citizens;
• An appreciation for their role in addressing real world issues including social justice issues;
• A respect for their role as environmental stewards and caretakers of their “place” in the world in which they live;
• The ability to inquire, gather, interpret, investigate, analyze, and reach informed conclusions;
• A clearer understanding of their own beliefs and values and how they can apply those ideals to our democratic society;
• A sense of empowerment when it comes to promoting fairness and justice;
• A greater comprehension of individual and collective human behaviour as well as societal patterns and trends;
• The tools necessary to find meaning in the relationships found in their families, communities, social structures, institutions, and society that surround them;
• Foundations that will help them explore issues of personal relevance that will help them maneuvre through personal, family, workplace, and public spheres of influence.
