Is Gaming a Sport?

By Jaylen Frost

Playing different sports is an important part of the American pastime. We have whole leagues, stadiums, arenas, and even money set aside specifically for our favorite sports. Some of the most popular sports include football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and track & field. However, aren’t we missing the popular hobby, video games? What qualifies as a sport? Anything that requires physical exertion, skill and is competitive can be classified as a sport, according the Oxford English Dictionary. The Merriam Webster Dictionary simply states, “physical exertion for pleasure.” This would mean gaming fits the spot to be a sport. Gaming qualifies because, like any sport, you have to practice to get better. You also have to gain skills, such as coordination, to perform correctly. Daniel Park, a man who claims to be a gaming expert, had a interesting perspective on this gaming topic. He mentioned some of the games that he plays and different tournaments for them. Daniel questioned, “How good do you have to be to play in a tournament?” The tournaments and how to qualify became a priority. Daniel said it was “you know like basketball or football or something, you just get really good and either apply or get invited, however they do.” This shows that tournaments are also included in the world of gaming, and that they operate in arenas the way sports do. When people win these, they get different awards, prizes, and even sometimes money for their skills. There are even multiplayer tournaments for teams to compete. The gaming world could be described as a digital court or digital field. There are even games centered around sport. With all the video games having just about all the qualities of other sports, including training, skill, and competitive events you could say gaming is most definitely a sport , but all games, sports, and even movies are just entertainment for the people who want to be entertained. It's all just different things created by bored people to keep occupied,so gaming being qualified as a sport should be decided by the people who play them.
