Online learning, put simply, is learning that takes place online, using an internet-enabled device to access learning materials. However, there are several more specific variants of online learning, differentiated by the tools used to conduct the class, how often the class meets in real-time, and whether there are in-person meetings. Please note that this is a general overview, your experience in each individual course may vary .
In asynchronous learning, students learn course material at different times and different places. This flexible instruction style allows students to actively take charge of their learning and complete assignments on their own schedule. Asynchronous classes and activities at TC are typically organized through Canvas.
Common asynchronous learning activities online include:
Participating in small groups virtually
Posting to discussion boards
Taking notes on recorded lecture videos
In synchronous learning, students receive instruction and complete activities in real time, allowing them the opportunity to ask their instructor questions directly, and interaction with their peers in real time. Online Synchronous Learning sessions at TC are typically held on Zoom.
Common Synchronous Learning activities online include:
Real-time lectures
Active participation in Zoom sessions
Posting to the chat board
Participating in breakout groups
A blended course is one that has both synchronous and asynchronous components. Blended courses aim to enhance the students' retention of material by encouraging them to think about course content outside of the lecture period. Blended courses are the most diverse in their presentation; they can have any combination of in-person meetings, Canvas components, and meetings on Zoom.
Common Blended Course activities are:
Real-time lecture followed by posting reactions on Canvas
Independent viewing of a recorded lecture to discuss in a Zoom session
The following tools for are necessary for online learning at TC. You will find more detailed information about each tool on its dedicated page.
Canvas: Canvas is TC's primary learning management system. This site contains your course syllabi and assignments. Although Canvas is the primary method instructors will use to communicate with their class, you may participate in a course that uses other learning platforms or none at all.
Zoom: Unless otherwise specified by your instructor, Zoom will be the online videoconferencing software used to conduct synchronous online lectures at TC. When you receive a link from your instructor, follow it at your appointed lecture time to join the meeting and participate.
