This workshop is open to researchers and education technology designers/developers as well as practitioners, school leaders, and policy-makers. We invite those interested in participating to submit case studies of a learning technology they have developed or are actively developing. Case studies can be presented as either a 1-3 page paper or a <5 min video. Case studies should provide an overview of the technology explaining its functionality as well as its learning goals, intended users, and implementation context. The case study should also highlight specific design features which promote sustainable use as well as the successes and challenges of implementing the technology in classrooms.
PART A
In this part of the workshop, we seek to develop a set of heuristics to guide designers and developers who are creating learning technologies with a goal of sustainable use in schools and classrooms.
To derive these heuristics, we will discuss specific case studies of technology design and development contributed by participants, highlight the technical features of the design and categorizing these features across case studies. By sharing these heuristics with researchers and practitioners, we hope to develop a common language, design goals, and examples of successes and challenges in designing for sustainable use.
PART B
Digital technologies are not new for schools but their integration in the school life poses many challenges which are related to a variety of issues from professional development to available resources, infrastructure, student and teacher digital competence etc. After the recent school closures owing to the pandemic, the demand for schools to use digital technologies has grown. How do the schools face this challenge? What are the barriers and what are enablers for the integration of technologies in the school life? How can the school community be involved in the process? How can we engage students and parents as well to cultivate a culture of participation and collective responsibility? Format and goals of the workshop: The main goal of the workshop is to identify the common strategies for facilitating the integration of technology at the school level, the challenges and the implications.
This workshop will be offered in a hybrid format, and we welcome participants to join remotely via Zoom or in-person in Braga.
We especially welcome people working collaboratively on a learning technology to apply as a team and to contribute multiple perspectives from different roles (developer, researcher, implementation, etc).
Applications to participate will be reviewed according to their relevance and contribution to the topic. In particular, we will prioritize applications which communicate work developing a learning technology at both the technical and contextual level.
Note: All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and the main conference.
