September 22

Our class has hit 20, 000 math questions! The kids are working hard on their math practice skills that have been assigned. We've just started the IXL diagnostic, so we won't have much required on IXL this week. Students may still choose to do some of course, but we'll pull back so that they aren't feeling like there is too much screen time as they take both the iReady and IXL diagnostic tests in school. The iReady will happen during a 1 hour delay schedule, making it convenient in that we won't lose math instructional time (except by having a shortened period for 2 days).

As we kick off our 2nd full week of school, the kids are hard at work with both review and new skills. Laying the foundation for high performance in grades 7-12 requires a strong base foundation. Now is the time to make sure we are comfortable with converting mixed numbers to fractions and back again, as well as to review our coordinate plane. Layered in is the work we did with unit rates last week and one new skill with proportions.

September 15

We have worked for 100 hours on math!! We are laying foundational skills for our year with fraction work. Pre-Algebra students are working on memorizing their square roots up to 225 (15 is the square root of 225).

Our nightly expectation is 20-30 minutes. Some kids went way past that the first week. Others need some support to hit this goal.

September 14

Our skills assigned this week are mostly from grade 5. You may wonder why so I want to share. Our goal is to revisit the basics of multiplying fractions and mixed numbers so that we have a solid foundation as we learn about unit rates. We reviewed these things in class, but IXL also has videos to help support (they are short - 1 minute or two on average). The kids now have excellence in quite a few of them!

September 13

We completed 5000 Math questions just a day after we got our 2000-question certificate.

We are still working on brushing up our foundation with multiplying fractions and mixed numbers in both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra. After all, it is just ONE day later.

I am pretty impressed and surprised at how fast the kids hit this benchmark!! Wow.

September 12

We completed 2000 Math questions and got our first IXL certificate.

We are working on brushing up our foundation with multiplying fractions and mixed numbers in both Math 7 and Pre-Algebra.

In Pre-Algebra, we're also working on learning about perfect squares and how to estimate square roots.
