This week we will be learning about volume, mass and capacity. Last week, we found out the mass of different objects, measuring in kg and g, then began to compare different masses and work out the difference between measurements. This week, we will continue to compare measurements, but also introduce millilitres and litres to measure volume.

This week in Maths we will continue to create and interpret pictograms, particularly practicing questions such as, how many more and how many fewer. At the end of the week, we will move onto temperature. We will teach temperature in celsius, using how to use and read a thermometer, as well as finding out temperatures in other countries.

Next week we will continue to plan our superhero comic books. After adding speech and thought bubbles to our pictures, we will caption boxes to add detail about when and what is happening in each picture. We will then perform our stories and begin to add more detail to our comics in the form of similes and expanded noun phrases.

Last week we thought about the main character of our legend. This week our learning activities will be focussed on describing the setting. Next, we will combine our knowledge of the character and setting to write an exciting opening for our legend.

We use our knowledge of aboriginal symbols to create Aboriginal art. The students already saw their teachers dressed up as Greek characters, next week they will get to know the stories behind these characters.

Week Beginning: 27th February 2023 Term 3 Week 7

Maths

In Maths next week we will continue to learn about fractions. Now we are confident in finding halves and quarters, we will now look to split shapes into thirds, name fractions and begin to count in halves. Please continue to use this language at home too, as it will help their understanding enormously e.g. if I was to eat half of this pizza, how many slices would I eat?

English

After learning about the legend of King Arthur in IPC this week, the students will plan to write their own legends. Their legends will be based on someone they know (it could be you!) and they will plan an exaggerated, heroic story about their chosen person.

IPC

On Monday, we will continue to explore the world of King Arthur, designing medieval swords, recreating the sword and the stone and writing magic potions. Then we will move on the learn an Aboriginal myth from Australia, called 'The Rainbow Serpent'. The Aboriginals told their stories through art and symbols, we will be recreating their art and describing the landscape of an Aboriginal settlement using symbols.

PSHE

We will be focusing on playtime behaviour and how to play positively with their friends.

World languages

We will be learning about how children travel to school around the world and in our class.

Music

Week Beginning: 20th February 2023 Term 3 Week 6

Maths

After the holidays, we will be moving on from shape and learning about fractions. In this first week on fractions we will be learning about halves and quarters. Please begin to use this language at home too, as it will help their understanding enormously e.g. if I was to eat half of this pizza, how many slices would I eat?

English

After 5 weeks of non-fiction writing we will return to writing stories after the holiday. We will focus on descriptive writing, and exciting story starters and endings. The students will be asked to use their imaginations to create amazing characters and magical settings.

IPC

In IPC, we will start our new topic 'Stories People Tell'. In this exciting topic, will look at the history of myths and legends from around the world. This week we will be reading the Legend of King Arthur. The students will retell the story in a comic books style and explore the world of King Arthur in our outside area. The students will build King Arthur's castle, recreate the sword in the stone with paper mache, make a magic potion then write instructions for how to make their potion and explore lots more exciting parts of King Arthur's world.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning how stories can help us understand our emotions.

World languages

We will be learning about how children travel to school around the world and in our class.

Music

We will continue to discover, listen and play instruments from the four different music families, especially from the wind family. We will play some music games while singing and playing percussion instruments.

Curriculum Day - Outdoor Learning (04/02): In Year 2 we are all very excited about the upcoming Curriculum Day. We are currently working with our Year 12 students to plan and organise fun activities for our Key Stage 1 students to enjoy at Forest School on the 4th. It will be Forest School, but bigger and better, with loads of new exciting outdoor learning activities and different zones to explore.

Maths

We will be learning about odd and even numbers in our Maths lessons. We will also be looking at 2D shapes and their properties, number of sides, and vertices.

English

Focus: How to write instructions?

We have been reading instructions, giving instructions and recording instruction videos. Last week we started writing our own instructions on how to make a plasticine car. We wrote the title, introduction and the 'you will need' list. This week we will be writing the instruction steps.

IPC

Topic: From A to B

This week we will be working on our Science skills, predicting on which surface a toy car will move fastest and conducting a fair test (by only changing one variable) to find out.

Curriculum Day (Outdoor Learning (04/02)): In Year 2 we are all very excited about the upcoming Curriculum Day. We are currently working with our Year 12 students to plan and organise fun activities for our Key Stage 1 students to enjoy at Forest School on the 4th. It will be Forest School, but bigger and better, with loads of new exciting outdoor learning activities and different zones to explore.

Year 2's Learning - 23.01 - 27.01

Phonics/Reading

Please ensure your child brings their reading record to school on Tuesdays and Fridays, so we can change books and/ or add a game to practice the new Phonics sounds.

English

Last week we introduced the children to instruction writing. They have really impressed us by using time connectives (first, next, then, after that, finally). Next week, we will use time connectives and bossy verbs to make an instruction video, draw instructions and finally write instructions on how to make a plasticine car.

Maths

We will continue the practice of dividing by sharing objects equally into groups. We will introduce dividing by 2, 5 and 10.

IPC

During our current topic, 'From A to B' our focus this week will be on map skills (geography) and planning and making a product (design and technique). Children will be asked to draw a map using their bird's eye view and adding a key to explain the map symbols. They will also design and make a form of transport, for this we would like to ask you to collect and bring in empty boxes, plastic bottles etc.

Year 2's Learning - 16.01 - 20.01

Phonics/Reading

We have had a fantastic response to the additional guided reading and phonics activities we have been sending home. We think your children will really benefit from the extra practice at home, so please continue to complete these activities with your children. New activities will be sent out every Tuesday and Friday (if the previous activity has been completed).

English

This week we have introduced the children to instruction writing. Next week, we will follow instructions to make a plasticine car. Then order and learn more about the features of instruction writing, including bossy verbs and time connectives.

Maths

After recapping our learning from last term in this week's Maths lessons, we are going to introduce dividing by sharing objects equally into groups. We will introduce the division sign and begin to write simple division number sentences.

IPC

The children loved the entry point for our new topic 'From A to B', as they got to complete a very exciting assault course. This week we will focus on maps. First they will have the opportunity to hide one of our learning animals and give directional instructions to their friends to find it. We will then draw maps from a bird's eye view and finally the children will get to create their own assault courses (with instructions on how to complete it) for their friends to complete.
