Our Story...
How do our Ojibway ᐊᓂᔑᓋᐯᒧᐄᓐ Keyboards work?
The keyboards that we designed allow the user to easily type in Ojibway words in syllabics. They work by transliterating Ojibway words.
For example: if you type the word anishinaabemowin which means 'Ojibway language' you will get ᐊᓂᔑᓋᐯᒧᐄᓐ.

We were excited to attend and present at the National Gathering for Indigenous Education in Toronto this week.
Shown in these photos are, St. Ignatius student Rayne Meekis, along with Debra Kakegumick and Alexis Kakegumick, students at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, Sarah Johnson, Manager of the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education and Mr. Filipetti Principal of St. Ignatius.
While in Toronto, they were able to meet up with MPP Mr. Sol Mamakwa and Riley Yesno as well!

St. Ignatius students Rayne Meekis and Gene Mendowegan. along with Debra Kakegumick, a student at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School appeared on Superior Morning on CBC Radio this morning. They were accompanied by Sarah Johnson, Manager of the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education and Mr. Filipetti to talk about their upcoming presentation in Toronto at the National Gathering for Indigenous Education.
The students will be in Toronto to talk about their collaborative project creating two Cree Keyboards (James Bay Cree & Fort Severn Cree) and an Oji-Cree keyboard, that will allow users to type in syllabics.

Today we were honoured to attend the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education Conference and open as the Keynote Address presenters!
This year we collaborated with some KOBE students who attend Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School to create three more Indigenous Keyboards. We submitted them to Google in the Spring, and are awaiting their release in Google Input Tools.

Tonight we began work on a new project!
We are working on 2 new #Cree ᐃᓂᓂᒧᐏᐣ and #OjiCree ᐃᓂᐧᓂᒧᐄᓐ keyboards for #GoogleInputTools with students from DFC and KOBE! Cody, Debra, Alexis, Riley and Christyn with elders Maria, Elizabeth and Saggius!
Our goal is to have everything submitted to the team at Google Input Tools by March 2019. Keep checking here for updates!

We were happy to be asked to present our project today at the Ontario EdTechTeam Summit in Cambridge. It was great to meet up with some tech friends from our previous summit in Alberta, and to meet other like-minded people at this summit.

It's official! Our Ojibway keyboard is now live in the Google Input Tools Extension that is free to install in the Google Chrome Webstore. To install it into your Chrome browser, click here.
Once you have installed it, you can view this instruction file to type in Ojibway Syllabics!

The Hour of Code - This marked the kick-off off us starting the process to code our Ojibway keyboard for Google Input Tools. With the help of Jordan Rhea (Google Innovator) who was teaching in Turkey at the time, joining us via Google Hangouts to get us going.
