Introduction

In 1902 london was riddled with disease, povert and overpopulation. The worst part of lndon as the east end where at one point the average life span for people who worked and lived there was just 18 years old.



Biography

Edward John Hatton Fenn was born on the 25th of july 1875 at 21 williams street kennington park surrey. He had three sisters Beatrice, Mabel and Florence. When he got older he married Martha Minnie Fenn (born castle) in 1902 at Roehampton, Surrey, near London, and they lived at 7 Heythorpe Street, Southfields,London. Together they had 3 children Herbert Charles Fenn, Jack Edward Fenn and Nora Minnie Fenn.

London in 1902 was very overcrowded and disease was everywhere causing lots of early deaths in the rich and the poor, The most serious disease in the poor quarters was tuberculosis, until the 1860s cholera, as well as rickets, scarlet fever, and typhoid. Between 1850 and 1860 the mortality rate from typhoid was 116 per 100,000 people.

Which probably played a defining role in deciding to move to new zealand.
