inquiry #1

report

In tongan My family emigrated from Niue to New Zealand. They were part of a huge wave of migration from tonga to New Zealand. They left tongan because they had less money. My ancestors chose New Zealand because of the many opportunities that it offered. This inquiry looks at the push and pull factors that influenced my ancestors and many others to leave their homeland and move to the small island nation at the bottom of the South Pacifica.

Push factor 1

Lack of money in Tonga- research jobs in Tonga- jobs in Tonga the jobs are really poor. The jobs are like picking up rubbish and all those poor jobs that you could think of and sometimes there is not that good air.there were jobs like building houses working in a wet dampy and they have lack of money probably get paid 7$ and the government was not supporting them as much they had less money so they could not buy a house so they made their own house/cottage.

Push factor 2

Education not great- research schools in Tonga

The schools in tonga were not good in the olden days they would hit the child. In the schools they would have cracked in the roof and would have holes in the walls too. If there would are storm to happen at least 1 class room would be demolished and the weather in the tongan schools

Discussion of push factors

They wanted to move because of lack of money and the education was not really good in tonga and there were too many earthquakes and too many storms too. The houses in tonga were no good; they sometimes have holes in them and in the roofs too. And the schools in tonga were no good to not that many teachers and lack of learning too. And the jobs there were no good. In tonga you have to pick up rubbish and all those poor jobs and sometimes you would have to work in the rain.

Pull Factor 1

Good lifestyle- weather and hobbies

The weather in New Zealand was good for them and it wasnt that stormy in new zealand but tonga had heaps of storms . When they came to New Zealand, people and friends were supporting them with money and all that stuff they had good support and they had good jobs . They were working as a charity worker and they were very happy to work there. And my ancestors had better health. And there hobbies we sewing and making clothes

Pull factor 2

Good work opportunities and education

The opportunities were good, they got a good job and education, they were working as charity workers and they got paid 15$ a day and the education in New Zealand

was high I guess. My ancestors were learning a lot of english they were getting better and better

Discussion of pull factors

They moved to new zealand because it was a better place for them to live in. There were lots of job opportunities and you would have a proper shop to work in and you would get paid a lot and the education was better in New Zealand so my ancestors got better and better at speaking in english. They did not have to struggle as many people were supporting them as they were living in New Zealand and the people that supported my ancestors were good people. People in new zealand were kind to them to

Conclusion they have a better place to live in now no they don't need to struggle as much. They have a nice house, a car to travel in and more stuff. They felt much safer in New Zealand. They had more money than before and now they own a house and now they have their own family.
