Why my family immigrated from Fiji to go to New Zealand

Biography

In 2007 my mum and dad emigrated with my two elder brothers from Fiji to New Zealand. Before they came to New Zealand my dad had gained qualification as a tradesman which was in demand in New Zealand. My dad had the same job in Fiji but when he went to go on holiday in New Zealand then he got a job offer which had better income than Fiji so he decided to stay there.

Push Factor 1

My family migrated from Fiji because of education being better overseas. Qualifications in Fiji require more studying overseas because of different health and safety laws. The reason why Fiji education was poor was because of poverty, Fiji has less income then New Zealand. Most people in Fiji do not go to secondary school and 65% of school dropouts are because of poverty. The cost of buses and school costs forced families to stop making their kids go to school and move to hard labouring jobs. My family decided they did not want their kids to go through the same struggles as they did while they were young and came to New Zealand at first leaving their kids in Fiji to find and create a better lifestyle.

Push factor 2

Jobs in Fiji are not as high paying as New Zealand because the economy struggles due not having much population and support from the government to generate higher cash flow. Fiji relies on tourists and exporting of fruit, vegetables, meat and other sources. Due to the bad hurricanes and flooding it is harder to create business on the island. If you're doing work for example construction it would be a very hot job because of the heat in fiji. Health and safety is also a concern when working in the island's trade work.

Pull factor 1

New Zealand has much cooler temperatures which makes the working conditions better and has great regulations creating a safer work environment. New Zealand is a better place to start a business because of the greater population and cash flow of people through the country. The move to New Zealand would allow me and my brothers to have easy schooling to suit overseas living and earn good money to make a living for them and the future generation.

Pull factor 2

New Zealand Also has low crime rates and always something to do. There's always events happening in New Zealand that you can go to for example the Armageddon which has a lot of fun games and cool stuff.New Zealand Has lots of places to explore for example the snow mountain where you can go snowboarding or you can go to skyline in rotorua

Conclusion

It's been 16 years since my family immigrated to New Zealand and we have seen a lot of changes. We have met new people and we have been enjoying our life here in New Zealand. We have a better standard of living and we have better education.

Were able to bring our grandparents here for holidays sometimes. I am proud of my parents for making the decision to move to New Zealand because if they didn’t I wouldn't have made so many friends. But we still miss home and whenever we get an opportunity to go visit our family and friends in Fiji we won't miss the chance.

Weather

The climate of Fiji in 2007 was hotter than New Zealand. For example Fiji experienced 270mm of rainfall in January while New Zealand had 92Mm. The average temperature in Fiji was 30°c while New Zealand experienced an average monthly temperature of 20°c. This shows us that New Zealand has a nice cooler climate than Fiji.
