How does my chosen text help me understand the social justice issue?
RQ 2.
What are some examples of racism Maori face in NZ?
RQ 3.Eighty-seven percent had seen other Māori being treated unfairly in shops. Most Māori (79 percent) said that non-Māori media negatively portrayed Māori all the time or often, and of the 71 percent of Māori with a Māori name, most (53 percent) had to explain or spell their name regularly.
The survey asked what Māori felt when exposed to racism, with participants saying they were left feeling deeply sad or angry at their experiences.
"This signifies that racism deeply impacts a person's health - both physical and mental - as well as their wairua," Tinirau said. "The harms of racism include grief and anger. Racism damages connections and compromises ability to pass on Māori ways of knowing and being to future generations."
What are the effects of racism to Maori in NZ?
RQ 4.
Racism affects Maori in lots of ways but one particularly bad way it affects them is in their access to healthcare and doctors.
Here a some areas in health where Maori are disadvantaged:
Māori have poorer access to lead maternity care in the first trimester of pregnancy.1
Māori have poorer access to high-level infant care.
Māori (and Indian) babies are less likely to be resuscitated.
Māori children are prescribed fewer asthma preventatives even after being prescribed two or more short-acting asthma medications in a year.2
Māori children require more secondary care asthma admissions.3
Māori have less appointment time, fewer investigations, fewer diagnoses, less treatment, few referrals to secondary care, and fewer interventions.4
I think this is….
The reasons this happens is because the majority of Maori in NZ live rurally and find it hard to access good healthcare as some have to drive miles to get it. Also many doctors in NZ are not Maori so they don’t always know how to treat or help Maori in the best way.
What is currently being done to address racism in NZ?

What are some actions I could take to solve racism in NZ

Technology can help fight racism because it can expose it quickly. For example the George Floyd incident went viral so quickly that it helped promote conversations about police racism in America. In NZ we have had similar incidents of racism recorded and posted online for example..
