Intro
On March 28th 2015, my parents, me and my brother set foot in New Zealand. This wasn’t the first time since we did come here a lot to see our other family that lived here and for vacations. But this time, it was different. This time, instead of coming for a vacation, we came to live here. We migrated here to live our life. There were a lot of pull and push factors to come here and there were a lot of tries to come like for example, when I was about to be born, my parents tried to give birth to me in NZ but sadly, it didn't work because at that time pregnant womens were not allowed to go on planes. So this time when we came, we were all ready. This report will show you how we came here to why we came here(push and pull factors).
Biography
On November 8th 1983 in Seoul, South Korea, Bokyung Noh was born. She had an older sister by 1 years whose name was Boyeong Noh. She and Bokyung apparently were not that friendly with each-other. Bokyung Noh grew up and didn’t go to university but studied to become a hairstylist. Sadly that didn’t work out because she accidentally cut her hand in the process and ended up not being able to do it. Then after some time, she met a man called Byungbae Lee. She and he got along and they got married so as getting a child, actually 2 childs both boys. In 2015, Bokyung and her family migrated to New Zealand from South Korea. Her Sister that was mentioned before already was living here with her family before Bokyung came with her family. Bokyung and her family lived in her sister's house until she and Byungbae found a house to live in and the children went to school. They still live here and they are both alive.
Bokyung/Lauren Noh is my mum and Byungbae Lee is my dad. They planned to come to New Zealand and came here in 2015 with me of course, and my brother who is 2 years younger. She is still alive and is 40 years old this year and is living with me and my brother. Now she is divorced with my dad(who’s in Korea) and is with her new boyfriend who she is still with. She does Nail and Eye care(nail polish and eyebrow) for her job and my dad works as a delivery man as far as I know(that’s the job I heard him doing the last time I called him).
Push factor 1
The most likely reason for our parents to choose to migrate was because of the environment in South Korea and when I mean environment, I mean the air around us, the land(like soil and animals I guess) and the sky, nature and more. Obviously, in Korea, there are factories, many of them. So when you look up into the sky, it’s really cloudy and grey. Also, the air isn’t really great to breathe in due to the fact that the factories pollute the air. It also affects the weather. On rainy days the raindrops that fall from the sky will be so toxic that you’re not allowed to go out without umbrellas(unless you wanna become bald and have a shiny head). But worst of all, The president back then(Park Guen hae) was the worst president you could ask for. Though don’t worry this is in 2015, she did get arrested and went to jail in the end. It’s gotten a lot better now obviously… or has it…? I don’t actually know very well but about 4-5 years ago in 2018 when we went back to Korea for a vacation it was better. Also the climate/temperatures are COLD in winter and HOT in summer. It snows in winter and can get under 0 celsius and in summer the weather goes above 20 celsius and sometimes up to 30 celsius. Unlike South Korea where this goes on every year without changing barely, New Zealand had a more balanced weather. If it’s cold it would go just under 10 celsius and in summer if it’s really hot it barely goes up to 20 celsius. Like shown, the environment in New zealand is a lot better than South korea and would’ve been a better option for us to live.
Push factor 2
The second push factor(or the second most likely reason to leave that country) is gonna be education. Now this is also gonna be a pull factor but I’ll get to that later in the pull factor. Most people know that the smartest country is Singapore with an average IQ of 107.1. But if you search this up on google South Korea is in 4th on this leader board with an average IQ of 104.6. Like shown, South Korea has a very good education system but on other websites it may vary(but South Korea has a high rank like shown below). So now you may be asking, why did we move here if this isn’t a bad thing? How is this a push factor? Well, with a high education comes hard learning. You have to study basically 24/7 in college as well as intermediate and primary. Obviously you have less study time if you're younger but here, TBC Year 9-13 have to study very long, especially 11-13’s. Like Shown, it’s harder to go to school in South Korea than here(also NZ is on 15th). It would’ve been easier for us to study and get a similar education(obviously it’s better than 24/7 studying though the learning will not be).
Discussion of Push factors
South Korea in 2015 wasn’t a very clean environment to live in. Even if it was “WAY BETTER” than the 1950’s and before, it still was pretty tough to live for us. The rain might make you go bald if you don’t put umbrellas on, the air is pretty toxic so you gotta wear a mask(before covid-19). As seen, it wasn’t a very good environment to live in as a child and so my parents made a decision to migrate to another country.
Pull factor 1
One of the pull factors in coming to New Zealand was that our aunty(Boyeong) called us to come here to NZ. We decided to come because we were going to move to NZ anyway before she even called but since Boyeong(aunty) knows this place better than us, she probably told my mum about this place a little bit more. It convinced my mum and dad to move here and everything was nicer here. The climate was also better(as shown above) than South Korea. Like this, there were more reasons to come to NZ and not somewhere else in the world.
Pull factor 2
The second pull factor was environment. I mentioned it in the push factors about the environment but this time, I’m gonna talk about the education system. The education in NZ isn’t as good as South Korea’s but it’s still very good. The way New Zealanders learn is a very new way of learning for South Koreans. It’s also a great opportunity for South Koreans to learn english. A lot of International students are Koreans that came to study English and learn here. Like this, Koreans come to NZ a lot of the time and we were one of them that came to learn, except we weren't here as international students, we came to live here.
Discussion of pull factor
As shown, New Zealand was the perfect option for us to migrate to back in 2015. It had fresh air, good education and we could learn something new. It was like a fresh start for us. New Zealand is and was a good place for us. I mean look at my family, we’re still here. Our aunty calling us made a huge difference I think because she was the one who called us to come.
Conclusion
Like you see in the push and pull factor, This place was perfect to come in 2015. I think Bokyung and Byungbae(my mum and dad) chose a great country to migrate to. I like it here, my brother does and my mum does as well. My dad left here to go back but who’s stopping him? He didn’t like it but we did. Now he’s in korea. I don’t think I would be moving somewhere else since I lived here my whole life and I like it very much.
