Professional Development 2020 - Maths
Teacher Only Day - Jan 2020
2019
Kia ora,
Wolf Fisher presented our 2018 End of Year data in Feb 2019. This presentation showed us how our 2018 students did, in one writing sample, 1 PAT Reading Comprehension Test and I PAT Maths Test. We also gathered data from our newly enrolled 5 year olds, using the SEA (School Entry Assessment) and our students who turned 6 year old during the year. (6 Year Net)
This presentation informs the Tautoro School teachers what our students can do independently at the time of sitting this one off test. Please note this is not the students OTJ (Overall Teacher Judgement) that is started on our students' end of year report.
T Shape Thinking Skills - This year we have identified Reading this years focus. 55% of our students are at and above in reading, however most of our students found sitting the PAT - Reading Comprehension extremely hard. Wolf Fisher provided evidence using our data, that our students didn't have the skills to synthesise text. They have suggested that we, as teachers, need to change practice by creating reading learning tasks, that exposes our students to a wide range of readings, understand the main message of each reading and then formulate an opinion based around the main focus question.
Schools needs to rethinks their curriculum delivery. We need to prepare our students for their future career. Yes they need literacy and numeracy skills but they also need to be critical thinkers, adaptive, resilient, team players, problem solvers, innovators, they need to apply their knowledge, they need to understand the world and society they live in, they need to be proactive learners rather than reactive beings. STEAM education can support our students to be ready for their world. If we don't make a change, schools will continue to mass produce blue collar workers, whose jobs will be replaced by robots.
