Beginning Band at Tatum ISD is designed to teach 6th grade students specific instruments in a band program. Each student, as a 5th grader, will be tested using the Selmer Music Guidance Survey Aptitude Test and will play - test on specific instruments of their choosing. After the play - testing is done, the student and a director will choose what instrument the student played best. It is important that the student not only likes the instrument but can also produce a quality sound. Once these two factors are established, the student will be more successful on the chosen instrument and will hopefully enjoy the class more.
It is important to also note that Beginning Band at Tatum is more like instrument classes, and not an actual band. Band means together...all the time. Our 6th grade instrument classes are designed to where only one specific instrument is taught by a director. Yes, there are classes that meet during the same period; however, the instruments are not mixed together. The classes will only be mixed together twice a year to play for the concerts. The beginning band's primary director for the concerts is Mr. Hendricks.
To get a true "band experience", the student will need to continue on into the Middle School Band. Here they will be meeting all together in the same band hall with one main director.
