Math 5 Advanced level for Grade 8 students
The standard Middle School course progression (Math 2 ⇾ Math 3 ⇾ Math 4) prepares students for access to both the full IB program and AP math classes.
Most Grade 6 students will be placed into Math 2.
There are two main reasons students may be placed into Math 3:
High math aptitude
Mastery of Math 2 content
Considerations for placement into Math 3 are made mainly based on the following criteria:
Teacher recommendations: Grade 5 teachers have a wealth of knowledge about student understanding of pre-requisite concepts for Middle School and student work habits. They are able to make a fair judgement of which students will likely be successful in a more advanced course.
MAP Scores: The Measures of Academic Progress assessment is given twice each year to students in Grades 3-8. The MAP provides a snapshot of each student's progress in a specific content area, compared to a large sample of students in the same grade. Students who receive a percentile score of around 50% are considered to be working at grade level. To learn more about the MAP, read this family guide.
At TASIS, Grade 5 students who score in the 85th percentile or higher on the Spring MAP test for mathematics are automatically eligible for placement into Math 3. These students will still take the placement test.
Placement Test: Grade 6 students are given an assessment at the beginning of the school year to ensure they are placed into the appropriate course. The placement test checks for mastery of the concepts that appear in the Math 2. It is normal that most Grade 6 students will not have mastered the concepts in Math 2 at the beginning of the year.
For those students who do not have MAP scores, or who scored lower than the 85th percentile, the placement test provides an opportunity to show mastery of Math 2 concepts and be considered for Math 3.
