In ancient Greece, the Greeks would cook cakes, called Obelios, between hot metal plates. As the knowledge of these cakes spread throughout medieval Europe the cake mix became known as wafers. In the late 1300's the first ever waffle recipe was published. Though some have speculated that waffle irons first appeared in the 13th–14th centuries, it was not until the 15th century that they first appeared. They started out as round irons that had a grid motif.
