Class overview

Social studies is a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to the study of people, their physical environment, histories, leadership and cultures. All classes follow the same structure that introduces students to history, geography, economics and government structure.

What is History?

History helps us understand change and how the society we live in came to be. The second reason history is inescapable as a subject of serious study follows closely on the first. The past causes the present, and so the future. Most students who study history, select a focus, whether that be art history, ancient history, education history, military history, or based on a region, like European history.

How to study History?

Students of history zoom in on the succession of events and work closely with original sources. Credits are usually gained by writing papers or giving presentations. Having progressed further in their studies, students can focus on a region, country or period in time.

Introduction:

    My name is Mr. Nicholas Stoulig, and I am excited about the 2023-2024 school year. I am the 5th - 8th grade Social Studies Teacher. This is my 22nd year in education and my 6th year at the SLU Lab School.

Educational Background:

I received my Bachelors Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in Social Studies Education in May of 2000. I taught high school social studies for 5 years at West Jefferson High School on the westbank of New Orleans.  I returned to Southeastern in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina, to earn a Masters degree in School Counseling.  I graduated with my M.Ed. in 2008 and began working as a School Counselor at St. Thomas Aquinas High School here in Hammond.
