Membership:
Each spring, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with a 3.5 GPA or higher receive an invitation to apply. Once accepted, members are expected to uphold the qualities of membership: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Members whose GPA falls below the 3.5 minimum will be placed on probation. Students may be dismissed from membership if they fail to improve their grades within the probationary period. Students may also be immediately dismissed from membership for flagrant violations of the school rules.
Each spring, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with a 3.5 GPA or higher receive an invitation to apply via their tangistudents email. Students are provided with an explanation of the application process, and an informational meeting is held within the application window. Late applications are not accepted.
Once the application window closes, an anonymous faculty council will review all applications and rate them, using an objective rubric, based on the information provided in the application. Submission of the application does not guarantee acceptance into NHS.
Once the faculty council has evaluated the applications, students will receive either a notice of induction or a letter of regret. Parents of accepted students will also receive a formal invitation to the induction in the mail. The induction is typically held at the end of the fall semester; however, for the past several years we have had to hold it at the beginning of the spring semester.
Sophomores and Juniors who are not accepted to NHS are encouraged to continue to strive to meet the qualities of membership and to reapply, with invitation, their senior year. The chapter sponsors merely facilitate the selection process. They are not members of the faculty council and do not make decisions about acceptance.
