Katz is a Houston - based coffee roaster. On our club field trip in April 2018, Will showed us around their large facility and gave us the run-down on their process. Not only did we get to see the roasting machines, we also got a walk-through of the warehouse where they keep thousands of pounds of fresh coffee waiting to be roasted! In the front of their facility, Katz has a free coffee bar for customers to try before buying. It is a really neat setup, with state of the art espresso machines, coffee-themed furniture, a vinyl collection, and much more. If it weren’t such a drive from College Station, it would be the perfect study spot!
In addition to our facility tour, we also learned how to smell and taste better! We learned about the flavor wheel and tried to pinpoint certain flavors. We learned about what it takes to be specialty coffee, and we even got to cup some! There is an objective scoring system that we learned about and attempted to complete during our cupping lesson… It turns out that we need a lot more practice, so we plan to return to Katz in the near future.
