Cognitive Science: Yamauchi Lab

Overview

How does the mind process and store the physical data that reaches our sensory systems, such as light falling on the retina, joyful music reaching our ears, or the abstract signs and symbols we encounter daily without much attention? Moreover, how does the brain integrate new information into existing conceptual frameworks, and how do our emotions, moods, and tacit knowledge, including personality, beliefs, and propensities, influence our behavior, both consciously and unconsciously? While it is clear that newly acquired knowledge can affect our behavior, to what extent does it impact the way we move, type, speak, and behave? Furthermore, is it possible to develop a computer program that can detect people's feelings, moods, and propensities? These fundamental questions of knowledge formation and representation have been the focus of my research, particularly in the areas of emotion and cognition, motor control, affective computing, and unconscious semantic processing.
