Current season information

We are continuing the Window Strike Survey in Spring 2023! We are extending our season(s) to two months this year to better encompass both species groups that migrate through here, vs previous seasons (Spring = mostly continental and Fall = mostly neotropical)

The main season will run from April 1st to May 31st!

We once again are asking for volunteers to help walk morning and evening routes on campus to monitor these bird strikes for vital data. No prior experience is necessary - anyone can walk a route! The shifts are run twice a day on both the North and South Quad (the morning route is 7-9 am and the afternoon route is 5-7 pm).

Information session(s) or practice walks may also happen to help volunteers or to create more public volunteering options!

NEW THIS YEAR: We are transitioning to Survey123 through ESRI for further data collection. The type is still the same but please record each bird when one is found. We are switching to this platform to get more specific data points on where strikes are found vs. the previous protocol of each building and window face. The link to the survey is below but you must have an ESRI online account to participate (free for ACES students). If you need help, please reach out to Colin directly: cdobson2@illinois.edu

Spring 2023 Results:

Below are some preliminary results for the season. This list will be updated weekly as well as an weekly email (on Sunday's) will be sent out to volunteers/those interested in helping out with the prior week's data and routes that still are 'open' in the coming week.

Species with the Highest Strike Rates:

Buildings with the Highest Strike Rates:

These include both alive and stunned birds. For further data, these birds are separated but for the numbers above, this includes both alive and stunned bird found. Much fewer strikes are typically found in the spring, specifically in April as 'near-distant' (continental) migrants strike much less when compared to neotropical migrants (in May). We also looking into reasons as to why this occurs as well as why there are differences in the strike rates in Spring vs. Fall.
