Our Mission

To bring together and provide support for diverse peoples to create and foster an inclusive and engaged community. To create a space for free communication among diverse groups to promote support and community.

SUPA is committed to providing a safe space for under-represented people to come together and discuss the challenges and issues they may face, both in our department and in academia in general. This group is open to everyone in the department, spanning all educational levels (including faculty and staff). We acknowledge and support all under-represented peoples in our department, including those whose representation is not immediately visible.

Here is a great list of definitions and elaborations for terms used in Equity & Inclusion discussions from the Equity & Inclusion in Physics & Astronomy Facebook Group. We highly recommended everyone check them out.

In addition, we also open our meetings to allies that wish to educate themselves — however we expect our allies to take on the full responsibility of educating themselves and not relying on under-represented peoples to do this for them.

Resources on the experiences of Black academics, strategies to improve the climate, and more.

The SUPA leadership has compiled a list of relevant resources on these issues. You can view these resources with our Black Lives Matter statement. We urge everyone to review these resources and work to educate yourselves.

If there are any other suggestions for resources to add to this list, please let us know!
