Integrating Outside Sources
Citation Styles
When using outside research in your writing, you must appropriately cite others' work. Providing citations means following an established citation style. Although engineers use a variety of citation styles, here are three common styles that you may find useful in your work. For class assignments, be sure to ask your instructor if they have a preference.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) References - This webpage provides guidelines for formatting references in journals published by the ASME.
The Chicago Manual of Style - Because the ASME uses a slightly modified version of the Chicago citation style, this website is useful for formatting citations for sources not listed on the above-linked webpage.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - Although IEEE style was not developed specifically for mechanical engineering publications, it is used for a wide variety of engineering disciplines.
Citation Management
When conducting research, keeping track of your sources is key for staying organized. Citation management software, like the programs listed below, allow users to build a database of citations for their projects. The following Research Guides explain the basic use of each listed citation management program. Additionally, TAMU Libraries regularly hosts workshops on citation management systems. See the Events Calendar for upcoming workshops.
