A great way to alleviate the effects fast fashion has on the environment is to donate clothes in your community. A few great stores to donate to include The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Goodwill, Planet Aid, and many more. These organizations are working toward giving clothes a second home, rather than sending them to the landfills.
Most donation centers make it easy to donate. Just pack your clothing in a bag, and drop it off at a donation center! Organizations like The Salvation Army and American Red Cross allow for you to schedule an appointment for them to pick up your donations from you, saving you time with an added convenience. Another way to decrease the effects of fast fashion is buying used clothes. Many people discard their clothes after very little use which leads to more garments ending up in landfills. Post-consumer waste accounted for about 60% of the 150 billion garments produced in 2012. Thrifting is an inexpensive solution for consumers to purchase high quality and fashionable clothing while also having a smaller impact on the environment. A few good thrift stores in the Bryan-College Station area are Plato's Closet, Thrifted Threads, Uptown Cheapskate, and Goodwill.
The best way to spread awareness of this issue is to use your voice to make others knowledgeable about resources and efforts they can be a part of. A great way to achieve this on campus would be to work with the campus office of sustainability or the department of student affairs to encourage the creation of events and resources. Some requests could include awareness campaigns from campus social media accounts, or even a clothing donation and recycling location on campus.
