Studying environmental issues equips students with the ability to act critically and creatively in response to the current and future environmental challenges. It invites students to consider the social, political and ethical dimensions of human transformation of the environment and to participate in the formulation of solutions to real world environmental problems. Students focus upper-division coursework in one of five environmental themes:
Urban environment
Occupational health and safety
Environmental regulation and compliance
Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST)
Global environment
The program stresses mastery of skills that will position students for future success in environmental careers and for graduate and professional training in fields such as environmental consulting, public policy, journalism, education, and law.
The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Systems Science (ENSS) provides students with rigorous interdisciplinary training in environmental science, systems thinking, and data analytics to address complex environmental challenges. The program emphasizes understanding Earth system processes and human-environment interactions through both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, preparing students to address complex environmental challenges using quantitative and systems-based approaches.
Students focus coursework in one of five environmental themes:
Biosphere
Climate Change
Environmental Modeling and Data Science
Hazards and Resilience
Water System Science
The minor in Environmental Systems Science embraces all earth systems sciences to give the student a rigorous interdisciplinary education including issues associated with environmental policy. Coursework of 15 credits centers on atmospheric sciences and air quality, resources and the environment, oceanography and marine pollution, environmental geology, and climate change. The minor prepares students for careers in industry, environmental and engineering consulting firms, non-governmental organizations, and governmental regulatory agencies, among other entities.
