Chemistry Prep Module (CPM)
The CPM is a preparatory module that aims to ensure students have the foundational skills necessary to succeed in their entry-level Chemistry coursework. These are primarily algebra-based mathematics skills. All undergraduate students required to take CHEM 119 (including but not limited to pre-med, pre-vet, animal science, nutrition, biology, biomedical science, public health, chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science and engineering, geology, mathematics, neuroscience, and kinesiology majors) should complete the CPM prior to registering for CHEM 119. That means, all incoming freshmen who plan to register for CHEM 119 are expected to complete the CPM prior to attending their NSC.
Although there will not be a hold preventing registration for the Fall 2025 semester, we expect completion of the CPM to 90% to increase your chance of success in CHEM 119. Failure to achieve this may indicate a deficiency in math skills, potentially impacting your performance in the course.
Please read this page thoroughly for information on the Chemistry Prep Module requirement.
General Guidelines for Chemistry Prep Module (CPM)
Each student will begin the CPM by completing a pre-test. The score on this pre-test does not matter.
As a result of the pre-test, the CPM will adapt, and students will only be required to complete content related to areas that need additional improvement.
Students are expected to take the pre-test and complete the subsequent content on their own, without the help of others. If needed, free tutoring will be provided by the Chemistry Department to help students complete the CPM during the first week of classes.
Calculators are allowed and suggested for completion of the CPM.
Additional resources are provided within the CPM, and students are encouraged to read all supplementary material in order to master the content.
Students should complete at least 90% of the CPM, at least a day before registering for CHEM 119. It may take 24 hours for scores to appear in Howdy to academic advisors. Upon 90% completion (or more), students will not see a completion on Howdy, but will directly see their completion progress on ALEKS, like in the image below.
After reaching at least 90% completion of the CPM, students can review the material at any time, but are cautioned to make sure they are in Review Mode, not Learning Mode or a Knowledge Check. See the video below for more information about Review Mode.
