Our Name and Logo
Deriving from the Cook Islands literal translation of “Life Journey”
Tere: Means to journey, take a path or direction towards a mission. To sail from one place to another for prosperity.
Ora: Means to give life, to be alive, to survive.
When the 2 words are connected, Tereora, to us; means to unfold, spread and disperse new thinkings/learnings on the journey.
The name Tereora was given to the Academy by the Deputy Chairman of Tamaki College’s Board of Trustees in 2019.
The logo denotes the 'iti'anga ra', the rising of the sun (life and our Aspiration to seek higher knowledge) this is connected to the school RISE values, the ‘rock’ being the foundation of cultural knowledge that is inherent in us, and the manu (bird) representing our Tauira (Learners).
The shape our our logo creates a 'key' to imply that our KEYS to success - Knowledge Enhances Your Success!
Tamaki College's Health Science Academy was re-launched in 2019 with the support of the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA).
Funding from PMA allowed the Tamaki College Education Trust to appoint a Director to implement a programme that supports Pacific students and their families.
Led by Tamaki College's Principal, Soana Pamaka, the Health Science Academy has grown to become the Tereora Academy to provide intentional and planned interruptions to the holistic learning journey for our budding scientist and health professionals while providing emcompassing support to their families. Taking an innovative approach to supporting the learners, Tereora is tasked with supporting the learner (Ako ora) and their wider family (Fanau Ora) with the focus of breaking down barriers, removing challenges and providing opportunties to the family unit that will make reality; the learners journey into Medical and Health aspirations at a Teritary Level whilst scaffolding the whanau towards prosperity.
With the philosophy of 'working from the outside in', Tereora plans to work with families to better engage, reignite and support the families educational ideology to ensure quality advocacy and support for their young learners pathway into health and medicine.
This is done through planned group and individual Talanoa, Family and cultural events, Workshops, evening classes/sessions/skills hubs, mentoring and advocacy.
